6-Benzyladenine (6 BAP) – The Synthetic Cytokinin
Plant Growth Regulators
Plant growth regulators are naturally occurring chemicals found in plant tissues that regulate plant tissue growth and differentiation. Plant hormones such as auxin, cytokinins, gibberellic acid, and ethylene are crucial for plant growth. They are typically synthesized in specific parts of the plant and transported throughout the plant from one part to the next. Plant growth regulators are chemicals produced synthetically or through fermentation processes that mimic the action of naturally occurring growth regulators and have the ability to modify plant growth in some way.
6-Benzyl adenine
BAP, or 6-benzyl adenine, is a first-generation synthetic cytokinin. It functions as both a plant metabolite and a cytokinin.
Cytokinins are members of the plant growth hormone family. N-benzyl adenine belongs to the class of 6-aminopurines, which is adenine with one of the amino group's hydrogens replaced by a benzyl group. It is structurally similar to adenine.
Role of 6-Benzyl adenine
6-Benzyladenine, also known as 6-benzylaminopurine (BA), stimulates plant growth and development by setting blossoms and increasing fruit richness through cell division. It inhibits respiratory kinase in plants, extending the post-harvest life of green vegetables. Together with auxins, this synthetic cytokinin stimulates plant growth and development.
Role Of 6-Benzyl adenine In Plant Tissue Culture
It is used in plant tissue culture to culture seeds in seed germination medium and to modify Murashige and Skoog (MS) media for shoot initiation. It is a common cytokinin supplement for plant growth media like Murashige and Skoog medium, Gamborg's medium, and Chu's N6 medium.
